Ginataang Halo-Halo

“Get ‘em when they’re on sale,” says a smart friend, so I wait for cassava, yam, sweet potato, jackfruit, etc. to go on sale and get them one at a time. I wait for coconut milk to go on sale, too. When three or more ingredients are available, I make sticky rice balls and cook them in coconut milk, then add the rest of whatever ingredients I’ve frozen… Definitely worth the wait, reminding me of the many months of waiting between sowing and harvesting tomatoes, green beans, bitter gourd, eggplant, okra, etc. for pinakbet. I was not even five when grandma taught me hard work, patience and gratitude. Bon appétit!  MLJ/22/05/2022
