Didn’t Disappoint

Saved from dreadful death
Among the skeletal remains
Of fellow Mandevillas
One late summer day,
With six weeping buds,
A new pot and trellis and
Hours of southeast sunlight,
The dying brought delight.
Didn’t disappoint. Adorned
My drab and barren abode.

Danger of First Frost Tonight

Danger of first frost tonight,
But our mandevilla and jade beans are still blooming,
And someone has just started his tomato garden!
Oh, dear!

How much time do I have?

Lots to read and write about.
Lots to paint and photograph.
Lots of places to go...
How much time do I have?

Homebound: Day 31

Looks like my health care gadgets are piling up. Guess I'd have to start saving for a motorized wheelchair. Whatever happened to aging like fine wine? Oh, well... I'll just keep on painting butterflies. Here's my Mexican bluewing on Indian snakeroot, one of my favorite butterflies. Enjoy winged creatures everyone!

How sweet thou art?

Sow thistle, what a sight it’s been!
With hoverflies hovering,
Red-belted bumble bees buzzing,
Cabbage whites silently slurping
Your sweet, sweet nectar flowing
And on your stems sticking
Spiders and ants wishing you’d stay
A never-ending summer they pray
For you morph into seeds
On white, feathery pappuses.

Oh, well. No use complaining
For henceforth we’re all wintering.
Thanks to your stubborn roots clinging,
Wicked winds blowing, seeds scattering,
Your sweetness we’ll be sucking next spring.

WHAAT? Only one day to bloom? Now I pray for more sunny days for the other buds to grow... Hibiscus, anyone?

Hope for Hibiscus

Salvaged from Canadian Tire,

A dwarfed hibiscus tree,

Severed of dozens of stems,

For regeneration of her gene.

Now aged, skeletal and shrunken,

She had this peerless energy,

When summer’s nearly over,

To give birth to many a bud,

Just like mighty mothers,

Bearing many a child!
