I was ready to dispose of my old, still-working and ever-reliable phones when I found out that I hadn’t deleted photos and text messages, so I quickly did so, trying not to be nostalgic. Sigh… Then I started asking myself why I had to switch phones (although not as often as some people do) when old ones were still working as they should. Was I a victim of commercialization, or was it of my own free will? A want or a need? Realizing now that I don’t really need one (except on long drives), maybe I could go back to my good old flip phone that’s so easy to use while perfectly snug in one hand, unlike iPhones that I drop all the time and require costly new screens. Maybe I could save enough $$$ to check off my bucket list? But imagine using an extinct(?) flip phone in public as a social experiment? How would people react? (a) Stop and stare (at something so alien), (b) start giggling, (c) laugh their hearts out, (d) exclaim, “Man! You’re soo old school! Are you a ghost from the past?” (e) admire the user for being a brave non-conformist, (f) get jealous about someone who doesn’t spend much on telecommunication, or (g) (add your own reaction…). This brings to mind an experience when a colleague saw my two-year-old GPS. She was in shock. “Geez, man! That’s a grandmother GPS!” To which I replied, “For sure. Have you forgotten I’m as old as your grandmother?” Pretty soon, I’d look like a great-grandmother, and anyone who asks me if I were an ancient ghost (for my hair, clothes, car, phone…), I’d say, “Yes, indeed! I’m a ghost from the past and I’ll be haunting you beginning tonight.” LOL. Peace out! Jamison/04/25/2019
