Simple and Frugal Lifestyle

The Carters' home and mine are alike in that we have a place to dry Ziploc bags (no label plastic bags in my mother's place) for reuse, and to reduce landfill waste and microplastics in the water one plastic bag at a time. MLJ/29/11/2023/RipRosalynnC

The Solutrean - the peak of stone tools workmanship

I will never be able to put up all the photos I have taken, each photo needs a lot of research, typically, to put it in context on the site. I do not have enough time left, life is short and death is long, but I am going to give it a good shot!

Life has been kind to me, I want for nothing, and am in good health. Not many in the world are as lucky as I am, and I am grateful for my good fortune.

My best wishes to all who read and enjoy the pages of my site. - Don Hitchcock -

With the recent discovery of Solutrean tools in the East Coast, can we assume that the first peoples of North America crossed the Atlantic Ocean instead of the Bering Strait? Or maybe both routes were used? MLJ/16/09/2023

Premenopausal?

Colleague: Why are you working? It’s your summer break.
Me: That’s why I’m working. I hate long summer breaks. I have to be active. Always moving… Osteoporosis.
Colleague: Oh, I see… I’ve heard about premenopausal osteoporosis. Are you premenopausal?
IJBOL (I just burst out laughing.)

What We Leave Behind

Easter 1996: Odessa, Ukraine
From a stroll at the Black Sea, we trudged
Up Potemkin Stairs while one talked about
Battleship Potemkin between huffs.

At the top we were greeted
By Governor Richelieu in bronze.
Up north: Vorontsov Palace colonnade
Inscribed with lots of “… was here,”
So tempting to add “Lina was here,”
But I dared not leave that behind.

Summer 2023: Bow River, Alberta
Graffiti on concrete at Carburn Park,
Messages on bridges and rocks:
“Daddy loves you.”
“Zach was the killer.”
“Be kind. God loves us.”

A red cap, mismatched shoes at Pearce Estate,
Infant socks, a lone sandal at Edworthy Park,
Clothes, empty water bottles, empty cans,
Scattered rocks stained from fire
Likely for cooking last night’s dinner
For trout’s in the River all year.

Bow River is low but is home in summer,
As welcoming as parks and forests.
Who wouldn’t want to flow along,
Live for a season or two, leave for winter
Along with wintering feathered friends,
And leave what we leave?

Oh, Kids!

My three-year-old friend slides down the inclined platform of an outdoor wooden playhouse, stands at the bottom, hands akimbo, looks up at me, and says, “Your turn.”

I was so tempted to show off my skill but with my aged knees and osteoporosis, I said, “No, thank you. I’ll take the steps.”

She was so disappointed!

_____________

Child: I like your glasses.

Me: Thank you.

Child: Can I take them off? I wanna see your eyes.

Me: Umm… I don’t think so.

Child: Why not?

Me: ‘Coz I won’t be able to see you. I’d be blind.

Child: Huh?

_____________

It’s the pre-school teacher’s birthday today, and she brought cakes for snacks, and bags of treats and packs of Oreos as giveaways.

One child exclaimed, “Oreo’s not healthy!”

_____________

A four-year-old boy’s daily expressions include the single F-word or WTF among others, confused why he can’t use them elsewhere when they’re frequently used at home, especially by his Mom. Child caregivers are in a quandary.

Hugs by Robert Munsch

After reading the book to a pre-K class:
Me: Did you like this story by Robert Munsch?
Class: Yes!
Me: Why?
Child 1: I like hugs.
Child 2: I like the end.
Me: Do you hug Mom or Dad to show your love for them?
Class: Yes!
Me: I wonder who gives the best hug…
Child 3: Mom.
Child 4: Dad.
Child 5: Grandma.
Child 6: My cat.

Whose shoes are these?

Behind Lorna Jordan’s River Passage
Signs of life that passed the night
With the roars of the raging rapids.

Further down Harvie Passage,
Two mallards dozed on a rock
A pair of shoes on another.

Whose shoes are these, you ask.
Did he overdose and think of a bath?
Did he drink too much and dance
His way out of Pearce Estate Park,
Leaving his shoes behind?

Whose shoes are these, you ask.
Is he in the southeast floating?
Is he walking on Deerfoot looking?
Is he downtown finding shelter
Or friends he can ply the road together?
