And getting me those lovely dresses and dolls.
Thank you for leaving me with grandma and grandpa
Who showed me faith, perseverance, patience…
(Such stewards of the Earth!)
Thank you for being my first teacher
Of independence, self-reliance, self-care;
Of reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Such that my schoolteacher didn’t have much to teach!
Thank you for your love of photos and mementos,
Of beauty, lifelong learning and change.
Thank you for showing compassion and charity
For being a wanderlust and for just being you,
Just as God has fashioned...
May you always see with clarity
And your feet take you as far as they can.
May you meet more strangers and exchange stories
About the wonders and marvels of places near and far.
May you always keep a smile on your face
And ready to laugh at things.
And when it’s time to cross,
I know you’d tell the Lord:
