How have we evolved?

The winters were long and merciless
In our caves we picked the youngest or the oldest
The frail or the disabled or the burden or the useless
To feed the hungry or offer to our gods
And end our misery.

Heavens denied us of rainfall and subsistence
The earth was dry and cracked and offered nothing
Nothing but carcasses the vultures feasted on
We dropped on our knees and created prayers
We moved our bodies and created dance
We made sounds and created music
To please our gods and beg for mercy.

Then we built temples and named our gods
Kept the fires burning and piled offerings
Conquered and killed others in their names.

With civilization, trading and accumulation of fortune
We created new gods to worship, kill and die for
They glitter and shine, bring comfort and fun
They give us long life, youth and beauty
Yet we’ve remained such an insatiable lot!
