Bending the trees yonder
A silhouette shaking, shivering…
Wailing Earth trying to wake you
From your final sleep.
Today hail the size of pearls
Rained down on your casket,
Draped in stars and stripes,
And swiftly jumped on the ground
As if embarrassed about
Their intrusion into
The solemnity of
Your departure.
Then heavens sent flurries
Like cotton balls swirling
And melting as they kissed
The green, green grass of winter.
Others were caught
By the innocent ones
As they stuck out their tongues
And stomped on the soaked ground,
Unaware of your courage
And your battle against
A dreaded disease.
And as you rose with the angels
Heavier, icy tears poured all night
And wet as they were
The children picked and packed
For their melting snowmen.
And as they’d said their prayers,
Including you, to rest in peace,
And then tucked in bed by heavy hearts,
Who knows how much they comprehend?
Who knows how much they’d remember of
The day you went away?
