And soon will be out,
Out into another world,
Trying your wings with strangers
From bus drivers to teachers
And friends, nice or mean or different
May you always be just and fair
And never discriminate.
And just like the way your gladly watered the apple trees and peas
And gently handled the tiniest wildflower and lady beetles
When you had a few words and were as innocent as could be,
May you always have kind hands and words,
Helping the needy, protecting the weak, stopping the bullies…
(Hopefully not as you fought the “bad guys” as a superhero,
As Spider-Man or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle though.)
Above all, may you always be amazed at the world’s wonders
At every blade of grass, grain of sand, ray of light…
May you continue to search for answers and seek wisdom
Be unstoppable despite life’s interruptions and detours.
And when a pit stop you need to get back on track,
Know that I’d be there for you no matter what.
