Being Mortal

Another good summer read: Being Mortal by Dr. Atul Gawande. I saw this on display in the public library and picked it up, intrigued by the title and the phrase "what matters most in the end" as I'm also a volunteer in a nursing home and have made meaningful connections with those who have lost some or most of their independence because of their conditions... A necessary reading both for the young and the elderly, the caregivers and those who need care. Happy summer everyone!

One take-away from reading Gawande's Being Mortal: Geriatricians can tell the health of the elderly by looking at their feet...

Does our family know how we want to spend the rest of our lives, what funeral arrangements we want, or whether we want the following: resuscitation, intubation and mechanical ventilation, antibiotics, and tube/intravenous feeding? These may not be easy conversations, but necessary ones, especially if everyone's finances are involved. As for myself, my last will and statement has all the answers... Jamison/02/08/2018
